Worcester Commercial Landscape Design

Stanbrook Abbey, Callow End, Worcester.

The brief: ‘Design a new frontage to a 1770’s Pugin monastery to facilitate a new wedding venue.’

Designs to historic buildings can be difficult as planning permission, English Natural Heritage and religious orders have to be satisfied apart from legislation concerned with change of use, highways access, car parking and the running of a venue of 80,000 square feet on 25 acres.

The landscape design in this listed grade 2 monastery had to included not only natural stone to complement the existing, but allow for the time in which the refurbishment was taking place and materials used in today’s processes. In addition turning a monastery into a 100 bedroom venue with dining rooms, entertainment areas and much more meant that the services had to be modified to cope with the additional demand.

The design and construction in this case included 2500m2 tar macadam road, 400 linear metres of kerbing, 600 L/m of electrical ducting, 400 L/m of foul and storm drainage, new water main, new gas main. 165m2 of York stones setts, 16m2 of York stone bespoke steps, 300 plants, 100L/m reclaimed walling and new coping. Bollard lighting, step lighting, wall wash lighting, tree up-lighters new automated gates, 1 tonne Sarsen stone markers, gravel paths, 150m2 spray and scatter flint covering and 2000m2 of turf.

The job took three months and was completed in March 2012
